The so-called RealD 3D technology is becoming a new craze. According to Wikipedia, as of January 18th 2009, there's another sixteen films that are going to be released with it this year, compared to five that were released the previous year. My Bloody Valentine is sort of a benchmark, in that it's the first RealD film to be R-rated. Now, the big question is, "Is it worth the ride?" I think so.

It starts out as what might be a Dead Teenager Movie. On the night of Valentine's Day, a group of teens go to a party in the woods, by a mine. A mysterious serial killer (Rich Walters) suddenly attacks them. He wears a mining suit, with a gas mask, and uses a pick-axe as a weapon. Like Michael Myers in Halloween, he doesn't speak. He's simply an insane killer.

Luckily, My Bloody Valentine is *not* a Dead Teenager Movie. We flash forward to ten years after that incident, to when the teens are adults (intelligent ones, at that), and the killer is long dead... or is he? The small town, near the mine, is rocked once again around Valentine's Day, with another serial killer, dressed alike.

To tell you the truth, I was never scared throughout the film, nor was I on the edge of my seat. Whenever the killer pops out, and the suspense is focused on characters walking slow and looking around, I just couldn't get caught up in it; maybe because I'm already accustomed to horror films like this. I'm already guessing the killer's gonna be here or there. When the characters notice the killer, and try to escape, I was more interested in how it's gonna go down.

I liked how part of the story is a whodunit mystery, rather than just set-ups and slashings. Who is this killer? Is he one of the townsfolks? They start to suspect one another, especially a police officer named Axel, (Kerr Smith) who seems to always think about his wife Sarah. (Jaime King)

The filmmakers even had the guts (bad joke) to throw in some humour, for the ride. It's as if the movie's winking at us, for being just a movie. As two characters are talking in a hospital, Axel is hiding behind a curtain, opens it, and joins in. I laughed at moments like that, and so did the audience I saw the film with.

Now, I bet you're asking yourself, "What about the 3D effects?" Well, they're neat to watch. Objects come toward and fly at you, like that pick-axe. Actually, the Lionsgate logo, and the opening credits are the best. For some reason, my eyes didn't hurt as bad as the kids film Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D. If you choose to see My Bloody Valentine in 2D, you'll be missing out.

The main thing I didn't like about the film, aside from not being scary and a little predictable, is how could the serial killer be so fast? Does he have super speed, or something? It doesn't happen constantly, though. Just a rare occasion.

So, I've answered my first question in detail. The film is worth the ride. I wouldn't care to take it again, but it was fun while it lasted.

7/10
